Elephant riot in Hazaribagh

Hazaribagh. A shocking incident has come to light from Hazaribagh district of Jharkhand, where wild elephants killed a young man. On Monday night, elephants crushed Mukesh Goswami, 30, who was sleeping in a primary school in Belkapi village under Gorhar police station area, killing him on the spot. This incident has created an atmosphere of fear in the entire area.

The deceased Mukesh Goswami was a resident of Bandasingha. He was sleeping in the local primary school on Monday night, when at around 12 o’clock in the night a large herd of elephants suddenly entered the village and crushed him. The elephants attacked so brutally that Mukesh died on the spot.

According to local residents, the elephants not only damaged the school but also demolished the boundary wall of the village’s iconic ‘Kali Manda Complex’. Apart from this, there have been reports of damage to the crops of many farmers. Hearing the trumpeting of the elephants, the villagers came out, but by then Mukesh had lost his life. The villagers tried to drive away the elephants by making noise and lighting torches.

As soon as information about this incident was received, the local police and forest department team reached the spot on Tuesday morning. Police have sent the body for post-mortem. The villagers have demanded appropriate compensation for the victim’s family and the need for a permanent quick response team to remove the elephants from the area. Forest Department officials have assured the victim’s family of compensation as per government rules.

After this incident, the Forest Range Officer has appealed to the local people not to sleep alone or in unsafe places at night and not to try to drive away the elephants after seeing them. In case of any emergency, inform the forest department immediately. High alert has been issued in the area.
