Nepal Speaker invites Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to visit Kathmandu!

An important initiative has been taken towards strengthening parliamentary cooperation between India and Nepal. Nepal’s House of Representatives Speaker Dol Prasad Aryal has invited Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to visit Nepal. Nepal’s Speaker Secretariat gave this information on Thursday.

During a courtesy meeting with Indian Ambassador to Nepal Naveen Srivastava in Kathmandu, Speaker Aryal invited Om Birla to visit Nepal. He expressed hope that the visit of the Lok Sabha Speaker will further strengthen parliamentary dialogue and bilateral relations between the two neighboring countries.

During the meeting, Indian Ambassador Naveen Srivastava said, “Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla is also keen to visit Nepal. He invited Speaker Aryal and Nepalese MPs to visit India so that they can study the Indian parliamentary system and functioning.”

Although there have been regular visits between the parliamentarians of India and Nepal, official visits between the Speakers of the Parliaments of the two countries have been limited in recent years. In such a situation, this initiative is being considered important for taking parliamentary diplomacy forward.

In the meeting, Nepal’s speaker Dol Prasad Aryal mentioned the historical relations between India and Nepal. He said the relations between the two countries are based on shared civilization, geographical proximity and deep cultural and social ties. He said bilateral relations are continuously expanding through cooperation in trade, security, civil aviation, water resources, connectivity and other areas.

Aryal described parliamentary diplomacy as an important medium to increase mutual understanding and cooperation between the two countries. He informed that after the formation of the new House of Representatives in Nepal, India-Nepal Parliamentary Friendship Group has been formed. The 10-member group is led by ruling Rashtriya Swatantra Party MP Bipin Acharya.

Praising the Indian Parliament, the Speaker of Nepal said, “The Parliament of India has been a source of inspiration for Nepal’s democracy. The Indian Parliament has played an important role in safeguarding democratic values and principles throughout its long history.”

He also praised India’s digital parliamentary initiatives, particularly the National e-Vidhan Application (Neva), and expressed Nepal’s interest in learning from India’s paperless Parliament and technology-based legislative processes.

Speaker Aryal thanked the Government of India for the logistics support provided during the recently concluded general elections in Nepal and said that Nepal gives high priority to its relations with India.

Meanwhile, Indian Ambassador Naveen Srivastava said that parliamentary diplomacy and high-level political dialogue will help in taking India-Nepal relations to new heights. He reiterated India’s continued commitment to strengthening trade, connectivity, energy, education and people-to-people ties between the two countries.
