Explained: Can the BCCI Remove Gautam Gambhir as India Head Coach?
Every defeat comes with questions, but two successive losses demand an inquiry. A T20I series whitewash provokes a frenzy. But when it comes to India, every loss seems to target the leader of the pack. That is where Gautam Gambhir finds himself in the wake of India’s 3-0 T20I series loss to England.
India’s thumping defeat by England in the T20I series has raised questions about the head coach’s future, as BCCI is said to have initiated a detailed evaluation of both the coach and the players. While Gambhir’s position has come under scrutiny, there is one crucial question that needs to be addressed. Can BCCI sack India’s head coach?
Yes, they can. But here is the twist. Yes, they can. But here is the twist.
Can the BCCI Remove Gautam Gambhir?

Unlike the Indian players, where the selection is purely based on performance and availability, the head coach is hired on a contractual basis by the BCCI.
Gautam Gambhir’s contract is valid until the end of the 2027 ODI World Cup, but that does not mean he will be in charge until then.
The BCCI can terminate the contract before the end if they feel the need to appoint a new coach arises.
In other words, it has the administrative and legal right to sack Gambhir at any given time. Having the right and having the will to do so, however, are two completely different things.

Why Is Gambhir Facing Increased Scrutiny?
India’s loss in England was far from a solitary incident, but rather a part of the team’s unfortunate slide following their T20 World Cup victory.
The Shreyas Iyer-led team has suffered consecutive bilateral T20I series defeats, with the first being their infamous World Cup exit to Ireland – a record they hadn’t been able to overcome in almost 20 years. England’s recent win against them adds to the list of undesired results, with the visitors adding to their unwanted history – first, scoring their first-ever bilateral T20I series win over India, in a match not played before, and second, recording the first-ever bilateral T20I series defeat in the history of the rivalry.
Such a disastrous performance in a high-profile match, where the expectations were to set benchmarks, inevitably leads to internal inquiries.
As such, the BCCI will reportedly be taking due action in the wake of this defeat, with the focus primarily on players, coaches, selectors, and management. At the same time, though, it must also consider the context in which these results were registered – with Shreyas Iyer and the team walking into a challenging phase of rebuilding the squad, following on the heels of the T20 World Cup triumph, where many fresh faces were introduced, and the captaincy changed hands.
The Board’s Position: Review Before Reaction
While the media pressure on the BCCI is quite evident, and the fans are already speculating about the potential sacking of the coaching staff, the insiders suggest that a complete performance review will be conducted before any rash decisions are made.
The board will take stock of the situation after the initial knee-jerk reactions die down. It is a disappointing result, but it will do a detailed performance review instead of rushing to judgment.
The review will consider a whole host of factors, including how the cricket committee made decisions on selections and the overall strategy for the emerging players’ cricket.
The new head coach, Gautam Gambhir, will also be reviewed, not only for his performance with the national senior men’s team but also for his performance in transitioning players from the IPL to the national team setup. It is essential to remember that Gambhir took over at a crucial juncture when the team was in transition, with a new captain, new faces brought in, and fresh talent coming into the fold after winning the world title. These nuances have to be taken into account in the performance review.
Why the Pressure Keeps Growing
While defeats have seen Gambhir under the spotlight, it is the decision-making process around these results that has drawn criticism.
Several factors have contributed to the discussion: Dropping World Cup-winning skipper Suryakumar Yadav to name Shreyas Iyer as T20I captain, keeping the inexperienced batting line-up on tour, his handling of the team’s make-up and order in the batting innings during the England series.
India’s inability to adjust to conditions in England and consecutive losses in bilateral T20I series during the transition period. As India’s head coach, Gambhir is bound to bear the brunt of criticism for the team’s overall performance. He will be the one who will have to answer for the results on the pitch. However, as of now, it does not look like his job is in danger.
It is normal for a coach to be reviewed after a poor overseas campaign, especially one where historic defeats were suffered. While Gambhir’s performance will certainly be evaluated, it is unlikely that the BCCI has lost faith in the project he was charged with overseeing. Unless there is a sustained period of disappointment with India’s limited-overs team, or the board feels the reconstruction process is moving in the wrong direction, Gambhir is likely to retain his post.

Transitions in international cricket can be particularly messy affairs. India is trying to rebuild a T20I nucleus while at the same time balancing between immediate expectations and long-term needs for the limited-overs World Cups in the future. And messy transitions tend to have their share of whitewashes, near misses, and controversial selection decisions.
The problem for the BCCI is that these can no longer be dismissed as transitional growing pains.
Technically, yes, the BCCI can sack Gambhir before his contract ends since he was hired under a contract with the board. In practice, a quick exit is unlikely. The review is almost certain to focus on the bigger picture rather than target one person. And unless India gets absolutely dismantled in the next few months, Gambhir will continue to enjoy the patronage of the BCCI as India tries to get through this transition phase before the 2027 ODI World Cup.
