Bangladesh: Sheikh Hasina will return to her country in December, decided to surrender herself

Former Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina and senior leaders of Awami League are preparing to return to their country around December 2026. Party leader Mohibul Chowdhury gave this information on Friday. Sheikh Hasina had to leave the country following student protests in August 2024, after which this is the first time that a definite date for her return has been revealed.

Sheikh Hasina, currently living in India, has said that she will voluntarily surrender in the courts of Bangladesh. In November 2025, the International Crimes Tribunal sentenced him to death in absentia. He was accused of human rights violations during the 2024 protests. Hasina believes that the legal action against her is fake and she wants to come back to prove it.

Hasina also made it clear that she has not taken any advice from any foreign government regarding her return. At present, Bangladesh is ruled by the government of Prime Minister Tariq Rahman, which has banned Awami League. This government is continuously demanding to extradite Sheikh Hasina from India.

Party leader Mohibul Chowdhury said that after his return, his main priority would be to first free the jailed leaders and remove the ban on the party. He alleged that the government was creating instability in the country with the help of groups like Hizb ut-Tahrir and Jamaat-e-Islami.

At the same time, Bangladesh’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam had said on July 1, 2026 that the government is continuing diplomatic efforts to bring back Sheikh Hasina for legal proceedings.
