A British woman has been forced to bury her husband in an unmarked grave after he fell ill and died in Cape Verde while on holiday in the US state of California. Colin Timson, a 74-year-old retired forklift driver, was on holiday with his wife Jacqueline on the African islands when he complained of illness and diarrhoea. The next morning when she returned after breakfast, she saw that he had fallen. Colin Timson was taken to hospital, but died that evening in July 2024.

At the same time, with the sudden death of the woman’s husband and the death of another tourist, the number of British people who have died on ‘all-inclusive’ trips there from 2023 has increased to at least 10. Regarding the death of Colin Timson, Cape Verde officials said that the cause of his death was severe gastroenteritis and bleeding from the digestive system. He said this caused dehydration, severe anemia and septic shock. Jacqueline, who fell ill with stomach cramps, said she had to bury her husband in an unmarked grave after just three days because she felt her travel insurance would not cover the cost of bringing the body home.

The last rites were performed at an unknown place.

He said that I was told that there was no option for cremation in Cape Verde. According to Jacqueline, she could not even bring her father’s ashes home. Instead, he was buried thousands of miles away from his family, alone in an unmarked grave. Retired forklift driver Colin Timson, 74, took ill on his second day on holiday in Cape Verde and died the next evening.

Death the next day after meeting his wife

Jacqueline says her husband, retired factory worker Timson’s all-inclusive hotel, Riu Funana, did not seem to be of the same standard. It was told that some of the food did not appear to be cooked properly and was lukewarm. The toilets near the pool were full of dead cockroaches and we did not go in because the water looked yellow.

When I left the clinic to go to the hospital, I came back to the hotel as I was told that he was in safe hands and I could visit him the next day. I did not know about his death until I reached the hospital. When I heard this news, my world shattered. Everything seemed blurry.

Tourists faced many problems

Law firm ‘Irwin Mitchell’ is said to be representing more than 2,500 people traveling to Cape Verde with TUI from 2022. These people had infections like Salmonella, E. coli and Shigella. Some of them lost their lives due to not getting timely treatment.
