India coach calls team ‘underachievers’ in overseas conditions after latest series loss
Ryan Ten Doeschate, the current Indian cricket team coach, didn’t mince his words after the latest series loss to England. The 46-year-old addressed the media after the loss in the 4th T20I game that took place in Bristol on Thursday. Before arriving in England, the team had suffered a historic 2-0 loss against Ireland.
Former Netherlands cricketer said that the team has spoken a lot about adaptability. He also added that it was easy to say that a side has to adapt, but the time has come to understand the process. Men in Blue have failed to win any of their games so far in their current tour of Ireland and England.
Speaking about the challenges, ten Doeschate made a rather telling statement. He said that the Indian side is not able to accept that they are underachieving in overseas conditions. There is some element of truth to the statement since the batters in this series haven’t been able to cope with the hostile pace bowling on offer.
Indian coach throws down the gauntlet
Ahead of the final game on Saturday, the challenge for Shreyas Iyer will be to avoid yet another whitewash. India’s coach during the press conference posed a thoughtful question to his team members and threw the gauntlet.
Ten Doeschate asked, “Do we want to be known as a team that scores 250 runs in Indian conditions and smashes massive sixes, or go to places like Manchester and Southampton where conditions are different. Those are the places where the team has to do well and be mentally prepared to make those adjustments. It is a challenge which cricketers have to take on.”
Former KKR star also praised Jofra Archer and Josh Tongue for their bowling. He said the English pacers bowled really well and the visiting side weren’t able to evolve. What might work in India certainly won’t work in foreign conditions.
India’s coach also opined that the team was filled with players who had won the World Cup in March this year. Speaking about Shreyas, theformer cricketer said that the 31-year-old was the only one scoring runs so far. He also added that the series was a disappointment and that the lack of time to prepare also hurt the team’s chances.
