‘The Divine Comedy’ In this poem from Italy, the journey to hell is written like Garuda Purana.
Man often closes his eyes and thinks about death, where he imagines hell and heaven. Such was the imagination of the Italian poet Dante, who wrote a poem named ‘The Divine Comedy’ after imagining hell. Sanatan scripture Garuda Purana talks about hell, in which it is clearly stated that a person gets punished in hell on the basis of his deeds. Similarly, Dante has described the journey to hell through the poem Divine Comedy.
Dante wrote ‘The Divine Comedy’ in the 13th century. It was sold in shops in Italy. People were impressed after reading the journey to hell written in it. The Hindu scripture Garuda Purana describes the journey of the soul after a person’s death, describing hell and the tortures it faces in hell. Similarly, in the poem Divine Comedy, hell and the punishment given to people in hell have been written in an interesting manner.

1. Limbo – Dante named the first hell Limbo, for those non-Christians who were born before Christ. The souls living in this hell are not punished, only the people living here are kept away from heaven.
2. Lust-In this hell, those people are punished who live their whole life in lust and greed for physical pleasures. Strong winds blow continuously in this hell. Strong wind feels like a slap to people. According to Dante, this punishment is given because the mind of a person indulged in lust does not stay at one place.

Similarity to Garuda Purana
Dante’s concept of Hell consists of nine circles, each corresponding to a sin. The person’s soul gets punished. Similarly, Garuda Purana also mentions different hells like Raurava, Maharaurava and Kumbhipaka hell, where different punishments are given for different sins in each hell.
Punishment is given on the basis of karma. Just as punishment for lust has been mentioned in Dante, similar punishment has been mentioned in Garuda Purana. Where the punishment for someone who steals is being dragged on thorns. The Divine Comedy mentions a person who keeps accounts of people’s deeds. Similarly, in Garuda Purana, Yamraj is the judge and Chitragupta keeps the accounts of the deeds.

In both the Divine Comedy and Garuda Purana, there is mention of the soul’s journey after death, its sins and virtues, and the punishment received according to deeds. For this reason both are often compared. However, both the texts are based on different beliefs. In Garuda Purana, the punishment of hell is considered to be temporary, whereas in the Divine Comedy, hell is shown as eternal punishment.
