Why do people give up non-veg food in Saavan – scientific reasons

Sawan, considered the favorite month of Lord Shiva, is starting from 30th July 2026 this year. During this entire month, Shiva devotees worship, observe fasts and observe fasts. Also, by adopting satvik food, they stay away from meat, fish, alcohol and other tamasic things. This is the reason why people who eat non-veg during normal days also avoid it during Sawan.

In Hindu religion, many rules related to food and drink have been given for the month of Saavan. During this period, apart from curd and some things made from it, it is also advised to avoid eating brinjal, bitter gourd and green leafy vegetables. At the same time, the tradition of not eating meat is not limited to religious faith only. Many scientific reasons related to health and weather are also given behind this.

After all, why do people avoid eating non-veg in Saavan?

1. Digestive power becomes weak during rainy season

The month of Sawan comes in the rainy season. At this time, due to high humidity in the environment, the body’s metabolism i.e. the digestive system becomes slower than on normal days. Meat takes more time to digest, which can cause problems like gas, indigestion, acidity and heavy stomach. Therefore, light and sattvik food is considered better in this season.

2. Meat and fish increase the risk of infection

Bacteria and fungus grow rapidly during the rainy season. In such circumstances, meat and fish can spoil quickly. If infected or spoiled meat is consumed, the risk of food poisoning and other infections may increase. For this reason it is advised to avoid non-vegetarian food during Saavan.

3. Many organisms have a time for reproduction.

The time of Sawan is considered the breeding season of many animals and fish. During this time, hormonal changes take place in their body and they can also be affected by many types of infections or diseases. Eating meat of such creatures is said to have negative effects on health.

4. Contaminated water and fodder also have an impact

The water of rivers and ponds often becomes contaminated during the rainy season. At the same time, animals also eat wet and sometimes contaminated fodder. This may affect their health. In such a situation, eating their meat can increase the possibility of diseases reaching humans.

5. What is the religious reason for staying away from non-vegetarian food in Saavan?

In Hindu religion, the entire month of Saavan is considered most sacred for the worship of Lord Shiva. During this time, devotees observe fast, perform Jalabhishek and worship Lord Shiva with all their heart. There is a religious belief that by eating sattvik food and observing abstinence at this time, one gets the special blessings of Lord Shiva.

According to religious beliefs, meat has been kept in the category of tamasic food. It is believed that Tamasic food can increase unrest, anger and aggression in the mind. Therefore, in a holy month like Sawan, priority is given to sattvik food, so that the mind remains calm and concentration remains in worship.

The month of Sawan is considered a symbol not only of worship but also of kindness, compassion and self-purification. According to religious beliefs, killing or violence against any living being should be avoided during this period. Therefore, staying away from non-vegetarian food is also considered a part of this tradition.
