Indian Railways has launched a pilot project using AI-powered camera technology to automatically detect stains on washed bedsheets and other linen used in AC coaches. The initiative aims to improve the quality of linen provided to passengers by reducing manual inspection errors and ensuring cleaner bedrolls before they are packed and supplied to trains.
The pilot is currently being conducted at selected mechanised railway laundries and forms part of Indian Railways’ broader efforts to enhance passenger comfort and hygiene.
Where Is The AI Pilot Being Tested?
The AI-based stain detection system has been introduced in mechanised laundries at the Pune Division of Central Railway and the Jaipur and Jodhpur Divisions of North Western Railway.
The automated cameras inspect washed linen and identify stains or quality issues that may not always be noticed during manual inspections. Railway authorities will evaluate the pilot’s performance before deciding whether to expand the technology to more locations across the country.
How The AI System Works
After bedsheets and other linen are washed, AI-enabled cameras scan each item for visible stains and cleanliness issues.
The technology helps identify linen that requires rewashing or replacement before it reaches passengers. This automated inspection is expected to improve consistency, reduce human error and strengthen quality control at railway laundries.
The AI system complements existing quality-monitoring methods rather than replacing them completely.
Existing Quality Checks Continue
Indian Railways already uses White-Meters in all mechanised laundries to measure the effectiveness of the washing process.
In addition, CCTV cameras have been installed across railway laundries to monitor daily operations and ensure adherence to standard operating procedures.
The new AI-based inspection adds another layer of quality assurance to improve passenger satisfaction.
Focus On Passenger Comfort
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw informed Parliament that every AC bedroll contains two bedsheets, one pillow cover and one hand towel.
One bedsheet is meant to cover the berth, while the second acts as a protective layer between the passenger and the blanket. This blanket cover sheet is washed after every single useensuring passengers receive freshly cleaned linen during each journey.
As part of another passenger-friendly initiative, blanket covers are currently being provided to all AC passengers travelling on North Western Railway trains and the Vande Bharat Sleeper service operating between Kamakhya and Howrah.
Technology Driving Better Railway Services
Indian Railways has been increasingly adopting artificial intelligence and automation to improve operational efficiency and passenger services.
The AI-based linen inspection project demonstrates how emerging technologies can strengthen quality control, improve hygiene standards and enhance the overall travel experience. If the pilot proves successful, similar AI systems could eventually be deployed across railway laundries nationwide.
