Brendon McCullum to be sacked as England’s Test coach: reports
Former New Zealand skipper and current England coach Brendon McCullum is set to be sacked from Test cricket. The 45-year-old has been at the helm since 2022 and ushered the ‘Baz-Ball’ era which saw the English Test side break records..
Tom Morris who is a noted journalist put out a tweet which read, “Major news out of England – Brendon McCullum is set to be sacked as Test coach. Formal announcement as early as today. Still a chance he will continue leading the white ball teams.” McCullam was in the dugout to see England rise to number 1 side in the T20I format after the series win over India on Saturday.
England suffered a 1-2 loss against New Zealand in the three-match series at home. This was also the first time the hosts had lost at home since 2012 in a Test series which had three matches. Ben Stokes had grabbed the headlines with his decision to call time on his international career after the Nottingham Test.
The next home Test assignment iis against Pakistan which begins on 19th August. The three-match series kicks off in Leeds followed by matches in Lord’s and Edgbaston. The hosts could go into the matches against Pakistan with a new coach and captain.
Bazball era in a nutshell
McCullum took over as the coach in 2022 and began with a win over India in Edgbaston. They also beat South Africa at home and also whitewashed Pakistan away from home with 3-0 margin. This was followed by a series in New Zealand. India defeated England by 4-1 margin.
After home wins against West Indies and Sri Lanka, the team was outplayed during the tour of Pakistan where they lost 2-1. They also went to Australia where they lost the Ashes series with 4-1 margin. It is not clear when the announcement will take place and who the next coach would be. But this is certainly an end to one of the most exciting and unpredictable times in English cricket.
