In the coming time, the government may have detailed answers to all these questions. Central Government is the country’s first Retail Consumption Survey Thinking of starting. The objective of this survey is to collect detailed data on the purchasing habits of consumers across the country, expenditure on different products and the state-wise retail market situation. It is believed that this will help the government in making economic policies and understanding the retail sector better. According to the information, this survey Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation (MoSPI) Preparing to do it. However, a final decision has not been taken yet on when the survey will start. The ministry is currently busy finalizing its scope, sampling process and timeline. This will be the first such comprehensive survey in the country, which will focus only on the purchasing and consumption patterns of the people.
Through this survey, the government wants to know how much of their income Indian families spend on daily needs and how much is spent on other goods or services. In this, information related to purchase of grocery, clothes, footwear, electronics, household goods, medicines, personal care products and other retail goods can be collected. Along with this, an attempt will also be made to understand how much difference there is in the shopping habits of consumers in cities and villages.
From the survey data, it will also be known which products are in highest demand in different states of the country. For example, one state spends more on food items, while another state spends more on clothing or electronics. This will make it easier to understand sector-wise consumer behavior and will give a real picture of the market to the government as well as the industry. Experts believe that the retail sector is an important part of India’s economy and provides employment to crores of people. But till now there is no dedicated and comprehensive government survey of consumer spending in this region available. In such a situation, the data obtained from the Retail Consumption Survey can prove to be very useful for policy makers, economists, investors and companies. On this basis, more accurate analysis of demand, inflation, consumption and consumer trends can be done.
This survey will also help in making government schemes more effective. If consumption of essential commodities is found to be more or less in any area, changes can be made in the supply, distribution and welfare schemes accordingly. Apart from this, by understanding the changing preferences of consumers, industry and business will also be able to improve their strategies. However, it has not yet been made clear by the government as to how the data will be collected in the survey and how many families will be included in it. But it is believed that this survey will cover both urban and rural areas across the country, so that a comprehensive and balanced picture of consumer behavior can emerge. If this survey starts, it will be a big step towards understanding India’s retail market. With this, for the first time, the government will have a detailed and reliable database related to people’s purchases, which can play an important role in making future economic policies, market analysis and decisions related to consumer interests more accurate and effective.
