The Rookie star Eric Winter shared that the cast shot a backup ending for season eight in case ABC decided to cancel the hit police drama.
The eighth season, which concluded in May, ended on a shocking note after Tim (Eric Winter) proposed to Lucy (Melissa O’Neil), only for the pair to be abducted moments after getting engaged.
Had ABC chosen not to renew police procedural, crime, and action drama for Season 9, fans would have been treated to a completely different ending.
Speaking with People at the San Diego Comic Con on July 25, the 50-year-old actor admitted “We didn’t know when we wrapped last season if we would ever come back.”
Eric shared that the cast was “thrilled” to learn that The Rookie had been renewed for a ninth season, saying, “Anytime we find out we have another season with this great group of people, it’s an exciting time.”
However, the cast and crew were prepared for the worst as well.
Plans were already in place in case The Rookie didn’t get the green light for another season.
“We even shot an alternate ending to the show,” the actor who played Sgt. Tim Bradford revealed. “It would’ve been different.”
But he kept the details under wraps.
