Thar or Crete? Before buying a car, know this secret of ‘chassis’; Otherwise you will regret!
When buying a new car, we look at mileage, engine and design, but ignore the most important foundation of a car, its chassis type. There are mainly two types of chassis used in cars these days, ‘ladder on frame’ and ‘monocoque’. Let’s understand which design is best for your needs.
1. Ladder on frame chassis
The structure consists of a heavy and strong iron skeleton like a ladder, on which the engine, suspension and main body of the car are mounted separately from above. This type is mainly used in trucks and large cars.
Why used in Thar and Fortuner?
Cars like the Mahindra Thar or the Toyota Fortuner are built for tough off-roading and handling heavy loads. A ladder frame chassis has extremely high flexibility and strength. Driving on rough roads, large potholes or hilly areas puts a lot of stress on the chassis, which the design is designed to withstand.

2. Monocoque chassis
The French word ‘monocoque’ means ‘unitary skeleton’. In this, the main body and chassis of the car are not separated, but welded as one continuous part.
Why is it used in Swift and Creta??
Urban cars like Maruti Swift, Hyundai Creta or Tata Nexon need to keep weight down and increase mileage. A monocoque chassis is light in weight. This makes the car easier to handle, provides stability while accelerating and saves fuel.

Safety and off-roading: which is better?
In terms of security: When it comes to accidents in the city or on the highway, the monocoque chassis is considered safer. These ‘crumple zones’ work properly, so that the impact of an accident is spread throughout the body and the passengers in the cabin are kept safe. However, the skeleton of the ladder frame becomes stronger if the vehicle is heavily loaded.
In terms of off-roading: Here the ladder frame chassis wins. If you have to travel on very bad roads, drive through rivers and streams, then the ladder frame performs well. If a monocoque car goes off-roading, its structure can become yellow.
If your commute is mostly city and highway and you want comfortable ride and good mileage, then ‘monocoque’ (Creta, Swift) is best. But, if you want tough off-roading, huge power and a strong car, then ‘ladder frame’ (Thar, Fortuner) is the right choice.
