Displeasure over the decision to remove slums

into the hands of protesters "stop atrocities on the poor", "respect human rights", "stop illegal arrests", "provide shelter to landless slum dwellers" There were such placards. The issue further heated up when a temporary accommodation center of the government in Kirtipur was flooded with flood water on Friday night. About 150 landless slum dwellers were living there. Security forces took them to safe places.

The government had removed slums across the country including the Kathmandu Valley in April. More than 15,000 people from 2600 families were affected by this. Of these, 325 families were kept in temporary centers in Kathmandu. On July 2, the government had asked them to vacate by July 6, but till Thursday, more than 60 families were still staying there.

Lathicharge on Gen-G workers

On Saturday, the police lathi-charged the youth workers of Gen-Ji who came to know the situation and arrested many of them. During this, a worker got injured on his face and was admitted to the hospital. Nepali Congress President Gagan Kumar Thapa condemned the arrest and demanded his immediate release.

Police also detained 26 Gen-Ji workers who were protesting in front of Morang district police office on Sunday. His allegation was that the workers were mistreated.

How did Balen Shah come to power?

The Gen-Ji movement, which began in 2025, was one of the largest youth movements in Nepal’s history. Angered by social media ban, corruption, unemployment and nepotism, youth took to the streets. The demonstrations turned violent, with government buildings burned and dozens of people killed in clashes with police. Under pressure, the then PM K.P. Sharma Oli resigned.

After this, former Chief Justice Sushila Karki was made the interim PM and new elections were announced. Meanwhile, former mayor of Kathmandu Balendra Shah i.e. Balen Shah emerged as a hero among the youth. The anti-corruption image and the atmosphere against traditional parties benefited.

His party got a massive victory in the March 2026 elections and Balen Shah became PM on 27 March 2026. But as soon as it assumed power, the same youth is now raising questions on the decisions of the Balen government. Protests are now taking place against him for the demands of the movement that brought him to power.
