England named former New Zealand batter Stephen Fleming as head coach and reappointed Joe Root as Test captain on Thursday following the departures of Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum.
Fleming had recently ended an 18-year coaching stint with Indian Premier League side Chennai Super Kings. As a player he was New Zealand’s longest-serving (80 Tests) and most successful Test captain (28 wins).
Fleming’s role with England will begin after the start of the upcoming Test Series against Pakistan, during which Marcus Trescothick will serve as interim Head Coach.
“I’m incredibly excited to be joining England as Test Coach. It’s one of the most prestigious coaching positions in world cricket and I am honoured to be appointed,” said Fleming in a statement released by ECB.
The Kiwi coach also expressed his excitement to work with Root. “I’m particularly looking forward to working with Joe Root as Captain – a generational talent who has achieved so much already.”
Root, 35, holds the record for captaining England Men in the most Tests (65) as well as to the most wins (27 wins).
“It is a great honour and privilege to be asked to be England men’s test captain again,” Root said in a statement.
“The Test captaincy is a difficult but hugely rewarding job and, after enjoying a brief taste of it again working with Brendon McCullum last month, I am excited to lead this next generation of players forward.”
