Trump Reacts to Russia Sanctions Bill That Could Hit India With 100% Tariffs, Seeks Iran Clause

New Delhi: US President Donald Trump has commented on a proposed Russia sanctions bill that could pave the way for tariffs of up to 100% on imports from India and several other countries over their purchases of Russian energy.

While backing stronger action against Moscow, Trump said the legislation should also give him broader powers to impose tariffs on Iran.

Trump Seeks Changes to the Bill

Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump said he believes lawmakers should amend the legislation to include provisions related to Iran. He suggested that tariff powers would be more effective than sanctions alone, adding that such changes reflected the intentions of the bill’s original sponsor, the late Senator Lindsey Graham.

What the Proposed Bill Says

The legislation cleared an important procedural vote in the US Senate with strong bipartisan support. It is designed to increase economic pressure on Russia over the Ukraine conflict by targeting countries that continue to purchase significant quantities of Russian oil and gas.

If enacted, the bill would authorize the US president to impose tariffs of up to 100% on imports from India, China, Slovakia, Hungary and Azerbaijan. It would also allow the president to decide whether to enforce or remove those tariffs.

Potential Impact on India

India remains one of the world’s largest buyers of Russian crude oil. The proposed legislation could complicate trade ties between New Delhi and Washington if tariffs are eventually imposed.

Last year, the US increased tariffs on Indian goods over India's continued purchases of Russian energy. However, a subsequent waiver allowed India to resume importing Russian crude after disruptions in global energy supplies. Since then, India&8217;s imports of Russian oil have risen significantly.

Bill Yet to Become Law

The sanctions proposal must still complete further legislative stages before it can become law. After additional consideration in the Senate, it will require approval from the House of Representatives before reaching the president's desk.
