Star batsman Yastika Bhatia’s record maiden Test century and brilliant performance by the bowlers set India an impossible target of 457 runs to win against England. In reply, the Indian bowlers reduced England to 130 for 6 by the end of the day’s play. Harmanpreet Kaur’s side are now just four wickets away from creating history in the mecca of cricket.
Historical Century of Yastika Bhatia
On the third day, India resumed their second innings. However, England bowled well in the morning session. Fast bowler Lauren Bell gave India a jolt by early dismissals of moderate bowlers Smriti Mandhana and Jemima Rodrigues. Sophie Ecclestone then attempted to bring England back into the game by dismissing skipper Harmanpreet Kaur in the leg (lbw).

Richa Ghosh’s struggling half-century and Harmanpreet’s innings declared
After Yastika was dismissed, wicketkeeper-batsman Richa Ghosh stepped up the pace as he came into the field. Richa counter-attacked the English bowlers and scored an unbeaten 50 off just 52 balls. After taking India’s lead to 450, skipper Harmanpreet Kaur declared her second innings at 341/7 and set England a huge target of 457 runs.
England got off to a disappointing start in chasing this huge target. Debutants Kranti Gaur and Saili Satghare bowled incisively with the new ball, dismissing both England openers Tammy Beaumont and Maya Bushir in the first four overs. Kranti Gaur then dismissed former captain Heather Knight, who was playing her last Test match. As Knight left the field, the Indian team honored her with a ‘guard of honour’. Soon, Sneh Rana took Nate Syver-Brunt to a hat-trick with a beautiful delivery, while Saili broke through Alice Capsey’s defense to take England to 59 for 5.

Amy Jones and Maddie Villiers battle it out
On the evening of the third day, when it looked like the Indian team would win the match easily, Amy Jones and Maddy Villiers took over. He gave relief to the Indian bowlers with a dashing and tenacious partnership of 67 runs for the sixth wicket. Sneh Rana and Richa Ghosh broke this dangerous duo.
Richa Ghosh, alert at silly point, took an amazing and stunning catch off the bowling of Sneh Rana to dismiss Maddy Villiers. However, at the other end, Amy Jones kept her place and completed her half-century. By the end of the day’s play, England had lost six wickets for 130 and still needed 327 runs to win, while India were just four wickets away from making history.
