Efforts to eliminate mountains of garbage in Delhi intensified, MCD issued work order
Municipal Corporation (MCD) has taken a big step towards improving waste management in Delhi. To ensure timely disposal of the new waste generated daily from all 12 zones of the capital, MCD has intensified the processing and disposal of 5,900 metric tonnes of waste. In this regard, MCD has issued work awards for waste disposal at 5 different places. This responsibility has been assigned to different companies, which will do the processing and disposal of waste at designated places.
According to MCD officials, these companies have now started the process of setting up their respective plants and other necessary infrastructure. As soon as this setup is ready, scientific disposal of the new garbage generated from the capital will be started. It is continuously working towards eliminating the mountains of garbage accumulated over the years at the 3 major landfill sites of the capital, Ghazipur, Bhalswa and Okhla. Along with this, the corporation is also strengthening the system of scientific disposal of new garbage, so that such a situation does not happen again in future. According to MCD officials, the work of disposal of old garbage is going on at a fast pace in Bhalswa and Okhla except Ghazipur landfill site. At both these sites, legacy waste piles are being rapidly reduced through bio-mining and scientific processing of waste.
According to MCD officials, the pace of disposal of old garbage at the Ghazipur landfill site is being affected due to lack of space. Officials say that the waste processing company is not able to get enough space for the final disposal of the processed waste. For this reason, the work of bio-mining and garbage processing is going on at a relatively slow pace in Ghazipur. Officials said that on the other hand, about 6,000 metric tons of new waste is arriving every day at the three landfill sites of the capital, Ghazipur, Bhalswa and Okhla, due to which the challenge of waste management has increased further.
According to MCD officials, Bhalswa was under the most pressure among the three major landfill sites. More than 4,500 metric tonnes of new waste was being added here every day, due to which the waste load at the site was continuously increasing and the situation was becoming critical day by day. To deal with this challenge, MCD first made a huge reduction in sending new waste coming from remote areas to Bhalswa landfill. Along with this, new systems for processing and disposal of waste were devised, so that the pressure on landfill sites could be reduced and new mountains of garbage could be prevented from forming.
Under this, MCD will make arrangements to process a total of 5,900 metric tons of new garbage at 5 places. MCD has fixed the capacity of different locations for garbage disposal. Under this, the maximum amount of waste will be processed at Bhalswa landfill site.
Where and how much new waste will be processed:
Bhalswa Landfill Site: 1,800 MT
Okhla Landfill Site: 1,400 MT
Narela-Bawana: 1,200 metric tons
Ghazipur Landfill Site: 800 MT
Singhola: 700 MT
