India is setting new records in medical research: Rajnath Singh

Lucknow. Union Defense Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday attended the 22nd convocation of King George’s Medical University (KGMU), Lucknow. During this, he said in his address that today India is moving rapidly towards becoming self-reliant in the health sector and is setting new records in medical research.

The Defense Minister said that India’s health sector has witnessed unprecedented changes in the last 12 years. Earlier, treatment of serious diseases used to affect people’s financial condition, but now eligible beneficiaries are getting free treatment under Ayushman Bharat Scheme. He said that the government’s aim has been not only to provide treatment but also to create an accessible, affordable and quality healthcare system. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India’s health system has become more self-reliant, accessible, affordable, modern and people-centric than before.

Rajnath said that there has been significant improvement in health services in Uttar Pradesh in the last nine years under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. Before the year 2017, there were only 17 medical colleges in Uttar Pradesh, whereas today 81 medical colleges are operating in the state. Apart from this, two AIIMS are also functional. Uttar Pradesh has now gone beyond the concept of “One District-One Medical College”. He said that the quality of health services can improve only when adequate number of doctors and specialists are available. With this thinking in mind, the government has made unprecedented expansion of medical education. Today India is developing indigenous solutions to global health challenges through gene therapy, nuclear medicine and other modern technologies.

He said scientists have successfully demonstrated indigenous gene therapy for the treatment of hemophilia, while an institute in Pune has developed cutting-edge nanomedicine for the treatment of breast cancer. He said that the government’s focus is not only on treatment but also on prevention of diseases.

The Union Minister described organ donation as the greatest gift to humanity. He said that after the death of a person, his organs can give new life to many people. He said that even today there are many misconceptions and hesitations in the society regarding organ donation, doctors have an important role in removing them. Sensitive advice and communication from doctors can motivate a family to donate organs. He said that doctors are given the status of God in the society and with this respect comes a huge responsibility. Every decision of the doctor affects not only the patient and his family, but the entire society and country.

Praising the university, Rajnath said that this institute has given many eminent doctors to the country, who have been awarded Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, Padmashree and Dr. B.C. Roy Award. He said that the doctors associated with KGMU have set an exemplary example of service, dedication and sensitivity.
