Drawing in approximately five million visitors each year, the Spanish coastal city of Benidorm stands as one of Spain’s most beloved holiday destinations – especially for Brits.
It’s known for its sun-drenched beaches, budget-friendly prices, and the vibrant Calle Gerona, lovingly known as ‘the strip’.
But whether people go there for a relaxing family holiday, or to party on the famous Strip, it can sometimes be nice to spend a few hours seeing what else the area has to offer.
For those tourists craving a break from the crowds and festivities, one British expat named Harry, who made the holiday destination his permanent home almost 10 years ago, has shared three lesser-known areas near and around the popular city that many tourists often miss.
“Everyone tells you to visit the same three spots when coming out to Benidorm, but I’ve lived in Benidorm for nearly 10 years and these are three hidden gems that you probably didn’t even know existed in the Benidorm area,” Harry said at the start of his video, before diving into his list.
3. Altea Port
“Coming in at No. 3 has got to be Altea Port,” Harry said. “The Altea port is around a 10 minute drive from Benidorm and it’s absolutely superb.”
The town of Altea is often mentioned as one of the most beautiful places in Alicante, as the town itself climbs gently up a hill, along with its white-washed houses and cobbled lanes, which is crowned by a blue-domed church of Nuestra Señora del Consuelo. And it’s only a ten-minute drive north from Benidorm.
The town features three main ports and marina areas: Club Náutico de Altea, Marina Greenwich, and Porto Senso. These maritime hubs offer nearly 500 moorings, vibrant seaside promenades, and dining options against a backdrop of scenic Mediterranean views
“You can see all the boats parked up, you’ve got pebble beaches, beautiful coastlines, lovely restaurants, lots to do. That’s an area that I highly recommend you visit,” Harry added.
2. Playa de Finestrat
Next up on his list is a beach called Playa De Finestrat, with Harry saying: “Just a short drive away from the chaos of Benidorm but absolutely worth it. Beautiful crystal blue waters, lovely coastlines, shallow water, which makes it great for the little ones.”
While Benidorm itself boasts gorgeous beaches, including the famous Levante Beach, Poniente Beach, and Mal Pas Beach. But if you’re looking for a more relaxing and less crowded beach to relax on, then Playa De Finestrat could be for you, as it offers a calmer, family-friendly beach vibe, local dining, and nearby historic sites, just 3km from central Benidorm.
“Just an all round lovely, lovely destination and a really nice, quiet, relaxing beach if you’re looking for something a little bit more chilled and a little bit more quiet,” Harry added.
1. Benidorm Old Town
“And of course. Coming in at number one by an absolute mile has got to be the Benidorm Old Town,” Harry revealed.
He went on to claim the area has so much to offer, from beautiful viewpoints to family-friendly restaurants, bars, including the well-known Tapas Street and Tapas Square.
“Especially if you’re looking for that bit of authentic Spanish vibe. The Old Town is definitely the place to visit,” Harry said. “And a lot of people haven’t ever been to the Old Town in Benidorm, which is absolutely crazy to believe.”
“So if you’re coming out to Benidorm, these are some hidden gems that no one really talks about that I highly recommend you visit on your next trip to Benidorm,” he said at the end of his video.
