Five districts of Nepal’s Madhesh province are engulfed in the fire of riots. Violence between Hindus and Muslims has once again erupted in these districts. The government has imposed a curfew in these districts to control the riots, resulting in the cancellation of exams and the suspension of train and bus services. The riots are most severe in areas bordering India.
According to e-Kantipur, Sunsari, Sarlahi, Janakpur, and Dhanusha have been the hardest hit. Initially, Balen Shah’s government failed to control the riots. Now, the government has decided to send Home Minister Sudan Gurung. On Friday, Prime Minister Balen Shah also held an all-party meeting.
According to local Nepal News, the violence began in the Kaptanganj area of Sunsari district. Before the Kanwar Yatra, some youths in Kaptanganj, Sunsari district, removed the Muslim flag already hoisted on a pole and replaced it with a saffron one. They then played a loud DJ outside a temple.
The police office says that some Muslim youths objected to this, which gradually escalated into an altercation. The situation deteriorated.
According to Home Minister Sudan Gurung, police opened fire to control the crowd, killing two Hindu youths. Another youth, Ganesh Yadav, was killed by police firing. The government has announced a compensation of ₹10 lakh each to the families of the youths.
