Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati has welcomed the decision to restore the name of Sant Ravidas Nagar. She has demanded that the Uttar Pradesh government also restore the names of other districts in the state that were previously named after saints, great men, and social reformers.
Posting on the social media platform ‘X’ on Friday, Mayawati said that the BSP government had created several new districts with administrative strength and public interest in mind. These districts were named after great men and saints who were sources of inspiration for society.
Referring to the BSP government’s decisions
The BSP chief said that during her government, several administrative decisions were taken aimed at regional development and better governance. She claimed that the new districts were created for public convenience and to bring administration closer to the people. Additionally, many districts were named in honor of saints, social reformers, and historical figures.
Questions raised regarding name changes
Mayawati alleged that subsequent governments changed the names of several districts due to political and caste considerations. She said that changing the names of districts like Sant Ravidas Nagar, Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Nagar, and Bhim Nagar was inappropriate.
She said that renaming districts named after great men is a matter of respect for them. Such names remind society of their contributions and thoughts.
Demand for Restoring the Name of the District Named After Kanshi Ram
Mayawati specifically mentioned Kasganj district and demanded the government restore its old name. She said that the BSP government had created Kasganj as a district named after Kanshi Ram, but later changed its name.
She demanded that the district named after Kanshi Ram be reverted to its original name before or on October 9, the death anniversary of Kanshi Ram. Mayawati said that if the government takes such a step, it would be a positive step towards honoring great men.
Respect for great men is important
The BSP chief said it is crucial to preserve the identity of places named after saints and social reformers. According to her, such names are not merely administrative identities but also reflect the history and struggles of society.
She expressed hope that after restoring the name of Sant Ravidas Nagar, the government will take positive decisions on the names of other districts as well.
