Former national selector blasts Shreyas Iyer’s conduct toward Vaibhav Sooryavanshi

Indian skipper Shreyas Iyer has endured a tough start to life as the captain of the side. The 31-year-old has lost both the series that were played in Ireland and England recently. The player has also been questioned over the way he has led the side. One of the biggest decisions that has been attracting criticism is to drop Vaibhav Sooryavanshi for the final game in Southampton.

Addressing the media after the game, Iyer was asked why Sanju Samson wasincluded in the playing XI. To which he had said that the team management wanted a right-and left-hand combination at the top of the order, seeing the conditions. He also said that Sanju was a key member of the side and had won many matches with his batting.

This answer didn’t sit well with former India skipper Kris Srikkanth. “I’m upset at the interview after the loss. Not the way to speak. The way you treat your players and how you form the team with youngsters is very important. If this is the way forward, then it is time to change the leadership group.”

The 67-year-old also added, “Shreyas said that the team was taking the best way forward. By that principle, Iyer and Gambhir should also be sacked. Why are you saying the players didn’t do well? What has been your performance? To be fair, the Indian cricket skipper was the only one who managed to do well with the bat and ended up as the visiting side’s top scorer.

Srikkanth recalls advice given to Sachin Tendulkar

In his YouTube video, the 1983 World Cup winner recalled how he had motivated a young Sachin Tendulkar on his debut during the Pakistan tour. “When Sachin Tendulkar made his debut at 16, I went up and told him, ‘ You won’t be dropped on this tour. You play fearlessly.’ The captain and coach had to give Vaibhav that confidence. The way they are treating the youngster is not fair.”

“The Indian captain had said at the toss that Team India wants to get back to the best way possible. If they thought Sanju was the best fit,  they should have then continued with him. Why bring in Vaibhav and then drop him? Why spoil his future? You are all ruining his confidence.”
