All ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz will have to pay a 20 percent tax from now on. US President Donald Trump announced this on Monday night Indian time. Besides, he said, Washington will be responsible for the security of this strategic waterway from now on. Trump has not released any country from the burden of this tax. Therefore, according to experts, the Indian flag ship will also have to pay this huge tax in Hormuz.
Trump wrote on the social media Truth Social, ‘From now on, America is the guardian of Hormuz. It is America’s responsibility to ensure safety and security in this highly unstable region of the world. Money is needed to fulfill that responsibility. Therefore, all commercial ships passing through Hormuz will be taxed at the rate of 20 percent.’ This tax has been termed as reparations by the US President. He also said that the entire process and infrastructure will be launched soon. In addition, Trump has also clarified that the traders of all countries except Iran will be able to travel freely and smoothly in Hormuz. No Iranian ships will be allowed to use this channel. The blockade against Tehran has just been re-introduced.
In a recent US media interview, Trump was heard saying, “We’re going to control the Strait. We’re probably going to run it. We’re going to be the guardians of Hormuz. And we should be compensated for that.” He announced the imposition of taxes on Hormuz after the US President’s comments.
