Are the doors of the Indian team closed forever for Suryakumar Yadav?

Delhi: Just a few months ago, under the captaincy of Suryakumar Yadav, the Indian team won the title of T20 World Cup 2026. Despite this, the captaincy was snatched from Surya. Not only this, he was also dropped from the team. In his place, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) chose Shreyas Iyer as the new captain. The team’s performance under his captaincy has been very poor so far, after which a big question has arisen whether Surya can once again return to the team or are the doors of Men in Blue closed for him forever?

Under the captaincy of Surya, the Indian team maintained its supremacy in T20 cricket. Surya took charge of the team permanently after Rohit Sharma’s retirement from T20 International in the year 2024. After this, he remained the captain of the team till the T20 World Cup in 2026.

India played a total of 52 matches under the captaincy of Surya. During this period he won 42 matches. As captain, Surya lost only 8 matches. India did not lose any series under his captaincy. Surya’s win percentage as captain was 82.

There was some decline in Surya’s batting performance as captain. Surya had scored 1232 runs in 52 matches at an average of only 28.65 and strike rate of 154.96. 8 half-centuries and one century came from Surya’s bat. Before becoming captain, both Surya’s strike rate and average were better.

Surya had scored 2141 runs in 57 innings at an average of 45.55 and strike rate of 171.85 till the year 2021-2023. Surya had scored 17 half-centuries and four centuries during this period. Even though Surya’s performance declined after taking over the captaincy, the Indian team won 11 consecutive T20 series. After this, it won the title of Asia Cup in 2025 and World Cup in 2026.

Team India’s condition worsens after Suryakumar Yadav’s exit

The Indian selectors removed Surya and handed over the command of the team to Iyer. After this, Team India has not been able to win even a single match till now. India had to face 2-0 defeat in the two-match T20 series against Ireland. After the shameful defeat against Ireland, India was also defeated badly by England. England defeated India 4-0 in the five-match T20 series. After India’s consecutive defeats, the discussion about Surya’s return has intensified.

35 year old Surya was seen playing at number three or four in the Indian team. Whereas now this batting order has been taken over by Ishan Kishan and new captain Shreyas Iyer. The performance of both has been excellent so far. It is very difficult for Surya to replace Captain Iyer, but if he continues to perform well, he can return to the team in place of Ishaan. However, Ishaan’s performance also matters for this. If Ishaan continues to do better for the team, no one can remove him from the team.

All in all, the path to return to Team India is not easy for Surya, but it is not completely closed either. His comeback will not depend only on his name or past record, but on his consistent performance in domestic cricket and T20 league, fitness and the needs of the team. If Surya regains his old rhythm and proves himself when given a chance, it will not be easy for the selectors to ignore him. However, considering the strong claims of the young players at present and the preparations for the 2028 T20 World Cup, the possibility of their comeback seems more challenging than before.
