Expressed displeasure on Samay Raina’s attitude

During the hearing of the case, the bench headed by the Chief Justice expressed displeasure over the attitude of Samay Raina. The court remarked that people in public life should understand the responsibility of their conduct and words. The court also said that more responsible behavior is expected from people who have influence on the youth.

When did the controversy start

This matter came to light in the comedy show ‘India’s Got Latent’ regarding comments made on people suffering from serious diseases like Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). In this case, the Supreme Court had earlier directed Raina to publicly apologize and take steps like raising funds in the interest of the disabled. During the hearing, the court was told on behalf of the petitioner that despite the instructions of the court, Samay Raina neither contacted the concerned organization nor followed the prescribed steps. On this the court said that it appears that the assurances made before the court were not followed.

Supreme Court warned of legal action

The Solicitor General also said during the hearing that there are better role models for the youth in the society and sensitivity is necessary in the content presented on the public platform. The court also clarified that freedom of expression does not mean that the dignity of any person or the sentiments of persons with disabilities should be hurt.

The Supreme Court warned that if the fine was not deposited within the stipulated time and the compliance report was not filed, further legal action could be taken. The court also said that artists and public figures should respect their rights as well as social responsibilities.
