Washington: US President Donald Trump has made a major decision regarding the country’s trucking industry. The Trump administration has announced a new national policy called “Freedom Haulers” to remove illegal immigrant truck drivers from American roads and replace them with retired American soldiers. The announcement, made in the presence of Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, aims to strengthen national security and provide high-paying, secure jobs for veterans.

Veterans will receive licenses directly, illegal drivers will be punished.
Under this new policy, Commercial Driving Licenses (CDLs) will be issued directly to retired US military personnel with heavy vehicle driving experience, without any complicated exams. Under the Trump administration’s strict regulations, the driving licenses of more than 28,000 non-citizens and illegal immigrants have already been revoked. Additionally, the licenses of over 24,000 other drivers have been revoked due to strict enforcement of English language proficiency requirements. Experts estimate that this strict approach could force approximately 200,000 migrant truck drivers out of the industry in the future.
Increased Concern in Indian Drivers and Punjab
An estimated 130,000 to 150,000 Indian-origin drivers are employed in the US trucking industry. A significant number of these are migrants from Punjab and Haryana. Although many Indians work in this sector with legal documents, increased scrutiny of trucking businesses, stringent English tests, and background verification could pose challenges even for legitimate drivers.

Impact on Remittances
If migrants lose their jobs, it will directly impact the foreign remittances sent to their families in India, particularly Punjab, potentially impacting the local economy. While Trump’s new policy has generated enthusiasm among American veterans, the Indian community dependent on the American freight sector is now looking extremely cautious in view of the impending crisis.
