Thiruvananthapuram: Three children died in three separate drowning incidents in Malappuram and Kottayam districts on Saturday as heavy rain caused water levels in streams and waterlogged areas to rise across Kerala, police said.
In Malappuram district, a three-year-old boy drowned after falling into a stream at Kandamangalam near Thiruvali under the Wandoor police station limits. The deceased was identified as Abdul Muhain, son of Muneer and Thasnibhanu.
Police said the boy fell into the stream near his house at around 12.30 pm. A search was launched immediately, and he was later found downstream. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Wandoor police have registered a case. In another incident in the district, a four-year-old boy drowned after being swept away by a stream near his house at Neerad. The deceased was identified as Adam Aiman, son of Abdul Hameed of Meleparamba, Chirayil near Kondotty. According to police, the child accidentally fell into the stream while playing and was swept away by the strong current at around 10 am.
He was rescued and taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead. Kondotty police have registered a case. In Kottayam district, an 11-year-old boy died after falling into a rainwater-filled pit at his house in Indira Nagar, Pariyaram near Vakathanam.
The deceased was identified as Milan K Shiju, son of Shiju Kurian. Police said the pit had been dug as part of construction work at the house and had become filled with rainwater following heavy showers. Milan accidentally fell into the pit at around 9.30 am. He was taken to a hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
