I Play Rocky trailer: This is Sylvester Stallone’s bout outside the ring
The makers of Amazon MGM Studios’ upcoming film I Play Rocky dropped the trailer of the film on Wednesday. With Anthony Ippolito playing Sylvester Stallone, the glimpse throws light into the backstory of how one of the greatest sports drama films ever to be made was Stallone’s plan B after getting turned down by producers.
The almost three-minute trailer shows Stallone getting rejected for his looks and how he sounds like having ‘three or four rocks inside his mouth’. Stallone realised the only way to break into Hollywood was to write a script and give himself the best role. That was how Rocky came into being. The rest, of course, is history.
The film, which Peter Farelly is directing from a script by Peter Gamble, also stars Anna Sophia Robb as Sylvester’s first wife, Sasha Czack, Matt Dillon as Frank Stallone Sr and Stephen James as Carl Weathers, who played Apollo Creed in the Rocky franchise.
Also, this is not the first time Ippolito has portrayed an actor on screen. He starred as Al Pacino in The Offer, which was about the making of the epic gangster saga The Godfather, made by Francis Ford Coppola. Ippolito’s TV and film credits include Grand Army (2020), Pixels (2015) and Purple Hearts (2022).
Toby Emmerich and Christian Baha are producing the film, which is set to make its debut this November.
Rocky (1976), followed the story of Rocky Balboa, a boxer who is challenged by the professional, Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers), for a match. The film also navigates Rocky’s struggles to become a professional. The film’s success led to eight sequels, beginning with Rocky II (1979), followed by Rocky III (1982), Rocky IV (1985), Rocky V (1990), and Rocky Balboa (2006). Three Creed spin-off films were released in 2015, 2018 and 2023, respectively. The original Rocky received ten Academy Award nominations and won three, including Best Picture.
