Role in Diljit Dosanjh’s film ‘Sutlej’
The film ‘Sutlej’ has been in the news recently due to the controversies of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) and its removal from the OTT platform. Now the director of this film Honey Trehan has shared an interesting information. He told that actor and singer Diljit Dosanjh had taken a symbolic fee of only one rupee for working in this film. According to him, Diljit was deeply involved with this project and his commitment to it was clear.
Why was Diljit selected?
Honey Trehan said that if Diljit had not been a part of this film, perhaps this film would not have been made. He told that he was looking for an actor who understands the social and cultural background of Punjab. According to him, casting any other Bollywood actor would have put the focus of the story on the actor rather than the character, which would not have accurately depicted the real journey of Jaswant Singh Khalda.
Diljeet’s emotional reaction
The director told that during his meeting with Diljit in 2021, he showed him the research documents related to the film and the photo of Jaswant Singh Khalda. Diljeet became emotional after seeing the picture. Honey Trehan said that Diljit put the script on his forehead and called him ‘Waheguru’ and said that ‘it would be shameful to take fees for playing the character of such a great person.’ After this he accepted a fee of only one rupee for the formal contract.

‘Sutlej’ is based on the life of Punjab human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalda. Khalda had allegedly investigated cases related to the cremation of thousands of unidentified bodies between 1984 and 1994. According to court rulings, he was kidnapped and murdered in police custody in 1995. His life and struggle have been depicted through this film.
Diljit’s cooperation during shooting
Honey Trehan also praised Diljit’s professional commitment. He told that during the shooting there were many delays due to technical and production reasons, but Diljit never complained. According to the director, he always said that the most important thing was for the film to be good and he was ready to provide every possible support to the entire team.
