Google Gemini: Privacy Protection Measures

Keep privacy in mind when using Google Gemini

Do you use Google Gemini a lot? If yes, then this information may be important for you. Have you ever wondered if this AI chatbot is trying to collect more information about you? It’s important to know if a chatbot needs your personal information.

Gemini’s data collection process

Gemini can access your search history, shared files, photos, videos, voice recordings, and even data from your Gmail and Drive. This data is used for training the AI model. Even if you’re not using Gemini directly, this AI model is collecting your data through other Google products. Google offers some privacy control options, but they can be a bit challenging to find and understand.

Prevent search data from AI training

Google can now use the photos, audio and documents you upload to improve its AI technology. If you don’t want your uploaded files to be included in this process, go to Google’s “My Activity” settings. Open “Search Services History” there and uncheck (✓) the “Save media” option.

Saving old chats from training

Gemini learns from your conversations. One way to stop this is to turn off your ‘Gemini Activity’. Go to the ‘Gemini Apps Activity’ page and turn off the ‘Keep activity’ setting. Keep in mind, by doing this you will not be able to see your old chats again.

Manually deleting sensitive chats

If you can’t delete your entire chat history, you can manually delete certain chats. First go to the Activity Page and manually delete a single chat or all the chats of a particular time. You can also choose to ‘auto-delete’ for 3, 18 or 36 months.

Stopping Gemini Live’s voice recording

Gemini Live records your voice by default. To stop this, go to the Activities page and uncheck the “Improve Google services with your audio…” setting.

Removing access from Google Drive and Gmail

Gemini can read data from your Gmail, Google Drive, and Calendar. If you don’t want this to happen, go to Settings > Personal Intelligence > Connected Apps and ‘Disconnect’ the apps you don’t want Gemini to have access to.

Turning off Gemini’s ‘Memory’ feature

Gemini’s memory feature remembers your likes and dislikes so that you can get better answers. If you don’t want this, you can turn off the memory feature by going to Personal Intelligence.

Use Temporary Chat

If you need to share sensitive or private information, you can use Temporary Chat. Conversations in this mode are not saved in chat history, are not used in AI training, and are only saved for 72 hours.
