CWG 2026: Gulvir Singh creates history, becomes the first Indian to win two medals in the same championship

New Delhi: Indian long-distance runner Gulvir Singh achieved something no Indian athlete had ever done before on Saturday. By winning the bronze medal in the men’s 5000 meters, the reigning Asian champion became the first Indian to win a medal in this event at the Commonwealth Games. Most notably, he had already won a silver medal in the 10,000 meters, achieving a double feat in the same edition. With this, Gulvir also became the first Indian track and field athlete to win two medals in the same Commonwealth Games, marking a significant milestone in Indian athletics history.

Para Athletics

India also received good news in para-athletics, where Soman Rana won the gold medal in the men’s F57 shot put event with a season-best throw of 13.40 meters, while fellow athlete Shubham Juyal took the silver with an effort of 13.28 meters. However, results in other events were mixed. Priyanka Goswami finished seventh in the women’s 10,000m race walk, while Dev Kumar Meena finished fourth in the pole vault with a time of 5.30m. Overall, despite not winning a gold medal, India completed its second-best Commonwealth Games campaign in athletics with a total of ten medals, including five silver and five bronze, its best performance since the 2010 New Delhi Games’ twelve-medal haul.

How the Finals Fared

In the 5000m final, held on the final day of athletics events, Gulveer clocked 13:24.95s to finish third. The gold medal went to Matthew Kipchumba Kipsang of Kenya, who clocked 13:23.61, while defending 10,000m champion Kay Robinson of Australia won the silver medal in 13:24.70. The 28-year-old Gulveer, who also holds the national record in both the 5000m and 10,000m events, remained in the lead group throughout the race and secured a medal with a strong finish in the final lap.
