Glasgow : India’s Rishikant Singh Chanambam had to settle for a silver medal in the men’s 60kg weightlifting event at the Commonwealth Games after missing his last two attempts in the clean and jerk .
Rishikant of Manipur lifted a total of 264 kg ( 121 and 143 kg) . He performed brilliantly in the snatch, equaling the Commonwealth Games record with a lift of 121 kg . However, he failed to perform well in the clean and jerk, finishing second.
Rishikant set a new Games record by lifting 121 kg in the snatch. However, he could only lift 143 kg in the clean and jerk. Bin Kasdan Mohammad Anik of Malaysia won the gold medal with a total lift of 273 kg . He lifted 121 kg in the snatch and then a Games record 152 kg in the clean and jerk.
Joshua Amunga Mboya of Kenya won the bronze medal with a total lift of 260 kg. He lifted 115 kg in the snatch and 145 kg in the clean and jerk . Rishikant successfully lifted 116 kg in the snatch, then 119 kg and finally 121 kg.
In the clean and jerk, Rishikant successfully lifted 143 kg in his first attempt , but failed to lift 148 kg in his second attempt and 151 kg in his third , thus missing out on the gold medal. Rishikant’s medal is India’s first among able-bodied athletes at the current Games.
