Should you use home remedies to remove dark underarms? Learn the truth from your doctor.

Dark underarms can make women feel unconfident. In such situations, people often resort to home remedies like baking soda or lemon to remove dark underarms. But are these remedies safe for your skin? Dr. Aanchal Panth, MBBS, MD, dermatologist and aesthetic physician, founder of Dermapholicks Hair Transplant & Skin Clinic, explains whether or not home remedies should be used to remove dark underarms.

Causes of Dark Underarms

Poor hygiene isn’t the only cause of underarm pigmentation. There are many other factors that can contribute to this, including friction, genetics, hormonal conditions, certain medical conditions, frequent irritation from shaving or deodorants, and even tight clothing.

Should home remedies be used for dark underarms?

Dr. Anchal Panth says that using home remedies like baking soda, lemon, or other ingredients to lighten dark underarms can worsen underarm pigmentation. This can damage your skin barrier, leading to irritation.

What can I do to lighten dark underarms?

  • Moisturize: To lighten dark underarms, moisturize thoroughly. Most people forget to moisturize their underarms, but like other body parts, they need hydration. Be sure to moisturize after shaving to keep the skin barrier healthy. Your moisturizer should be fragrance-free.
  • Exfoliate: Don’t forget to exfoliate your underarms. This removes dead skin, deodorant residue, and stubborn bacteria, reducing dark spots and sweat odor. It’s important to gently exfoliate your underarms 1 to 2 times a week.
  • Creams containing niacinamide : To lighten dark underarms, use creams containing niacinamides. These prevent the transfer of melanin to skin cells. Use dark spot brightening creams as recommended by your doctor.
