Balochistan Declares Independence: Balochistan’s claim for independence poses a major dilemma for India – ..
The biggest and most sensitive development of this time is unfolding on the geopolitical stage of South Asia. Balochistan, Pakistan’s largest, strategically important and long-rested province, has unilaterally announced its complete independence from Pakistan and establishment of a new sovereign nation. This unexpected claim made on social media (X) by Mir Yar Baloch, who calls himself a representative of the Baloch movement, has shaken the ground under the feet of the Islamabad administration. Although this claim is yet to be officially confirmed by the Government of Pakistan or international organizations, the diplomatic help sought by Baloch representatives at the global level and especially from India has put New Delhi in an unprecedented triangular dilemma.
Claim of control over 85 percent area: New currency ‘Baluchi Phallus’ and national anthem also released
According to official Baloch documents and announcements going viral on social media, the defense and security forces of the self-proclaimed ‘Republic of Balochistan’ have claimed to have established their complete control over about 85 percent of the territory of the province. According to Mir Yar Baloch, this new country, along with designing its new national flag and system of governance, has also adopted its official national anthem ‘Ma Chuken Balochani’. Not only this, as a symbol of economic independence, he has also announced to launch his new national currency ‘Baluchi Phallus’ in the market. The Baloch administration claims that fed up with the atrocities of the Pakistani Army, many of their local personnel have resigned and now a large army of about 5 lakh personnel is ready to completely drive out the Pakistani Army from the area by the end of 2026.
Claim of possession of natural resources and mines: Anger erupts against CPEC and Chinese exploitation
The biggest reason for this historical rebellion and freedom movement is the rich natural resources of this region and the alleged illegal occupation of them by China-Pakistan. This entire region of Balochistan is filled with the world’s richest gold, silver, diamond and copper mines as well as vast gas fields. Local Baloch citizens allege that Beijing and Islamabad together are ruthlessly exploiting their resources through the billion-dollar ‘China-Pakistan Economic Corridor’ (CPEC) project and the Gwadar deep sea port located near the Gulf of Oman, while the native people there are still forced to live in extreme poverty and lack of basic facilities. Baloch rebels claim that they have now taken all these strategic mines and gas fields under their direct control.
Special emotional appeal of Baloch to India: “Stop calling us part of Pakistan”
The most sensitive aspect of this entire incident is related to India. Top representatives of Balochistan have made an extremely emotional and strong appeal to the Indian media, intellectuals and common citizens. He has said that calling the Baloch people “Pakistan’s own people” or “the internal part of Pakistan” in international forums should be stopped immediately. He clarified that racially, culturally and historically Baloch and Pakistanis (especially the majority Punjabi community) are completely different. Baloch representatives alleged that they have been victims of brutal air strikes, forced disappearances and gross human rights violations by the Pakistani Army for decades and now they will not remain with Pakistan at any cost.
Triangular litmus test of Indian foreign policy: Diplomatic dilemma on three fronts
Balochistan has sought international recognition from India as an independent nation. This situation is no less than a litmus test for New Delhi, because a single step taken here can land India in a three-way diplomatic crisis:
-
Opportunity for Pakistan to create narrative: If India recognizes Balochistan as a separate country, it will be seen as an attempt to break up Pakistan. This will give Islamabad a direct excuse to create an international narrative against India at global forums like the United Nations (UN) and hit back at New Delhi’s interference in the internal matter of Kashmir.
-
Danger of direct conflict with China: Balochistan is the heart of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s highly ambitious ‘Belt and Road Initiative’ (BRI) and CPEC. There China is involved in an international airport and heavy mining projects. India’s support for Baloch independence could trigger a very dangerous and new phase of tension in India-China border and strategic relations.
-
Bitterness in strategic relations with Iran: A large portion of the Baloch population also lives in neighboring Iran, and Tehran has always strongly warned against any outside support for Baloch separatism. India’s strategic interests are directly linked to Iran’s Chabahar Port, which is the gateway to Central Asia. In such a situation, angering Iran would be a huge risk for India’s economic and geopolitical interests.
This move by Balochistan in this troubled region of regional stability and deep penetration of terrorism has put the policy makers all over the world on alert mode, and now it remains to be seen what stand the Indian Ministry of External Affairs takes on this very complex international crisis.
