Jammu & Kashmir: Firing after attempt to snatch service rifle; one person killed, three soldiers injured

A religious preacher was detained

Bhaderwah. A man was killed while three Special Operations Group (SOG) soldiers were injured in firing after they tried to snatch a government rifle from security personnel in Jammu and Kashmir’s Doda district. Officials gave this information on Friday. Police officials said that a religious preacher has been detained in connection with the incident. However, its relation to the incident was not immediately clear.

A senior officer said that after receiving information about suspicious activity in the high altitude area, a SOG team was ambushed on the Jai-Gandoh road, about 35 km from Bhaderwah town, on Thursday.

He told that at around 11.30 pm, the SOG team stopped a youth who attacked the security personnel and tried to snatch their official rifle. During the scuffle, a SOG jawan opened fire, the officer said. In this the young man was shot, while three policemen were also injured.

According to officials, all four were first taken to the sub-district hospital of Bhaderwah, from where they were referred to the Government Medical College and Hospital, Doda for better treatment. 30-year-old Arif Hussain, resident of Chika village, died during treatment.

He said that a religious preacher has been detained in the case. As a precautionary measure, additional contingents of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and police have been deployed in Bhaderwah city. Officials said that the army has also started a search operation in Jai area.
