Mahaprabhu Jagannath Film Release Temporarily Halted
The Supreme Court of India has upheld the interim order of the Orissa High Court, restraining the release of the animation film Mahaprabhu Jagannath until the completion of the ongoing Rath Yatra.
The apex court observed that the film, alleged to distort the culture, rituals, and traditions of Lord Jagannath, should not be released during the sacred festival. The ruling came after petitions raised concerns over misrepresentation of Jagannath’s heritage.
Advocate General Pitambar Acharya represented the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration, while senior advocate Tushar Mehetta argued on behalf of the state government. The petition was filed by temple management committee member Mahesh Sahu, who sought judicial intervention against the film’s release.
The court emphasised that cultural sensitivity must be respected, especially during the Rath Yatra, and directed that the film’s release remain suspended until further review.
