Stock market timings will change from August 3rd! Major changes to F&O trading and closing, what will be the impact on investors?

Share Market New Timing For Trade: The Indian stock market is set to undergo a major change starting August 3, 2026. Closing Auction Sessions (CAS) are being introduced for stocks listed in futures and options (F&O). This will change the method for determining closing prices, extend derivatives trading hours by 10 minutes, and stagger market closing times for different segments.

This change won’t significantly impact ordinary and long-term investors, but it’s significant for traders, large institutional investors , and asset managers. Let’s explore the details.

Key changes to timing and trading process

  • Non-F&O shares: These shares will remain unchanged. These shares will continue to trade as usual until 3:30 pm.
  • F&O stocks:   Normal trading in these stocks will close at 3:15 PM. This will be followed by a “closing auction session” from 3:15 PM to 3:35 PM, where buy and sell orders will be combined to arrive at a fixed price.
  • Derivatives Trading (F&O):  Stock and index derivatives will now trade until 3:40 PM. This means an additional 10 minutes of trading time. This will be followed by a post-close session from 3:50 PM to 4:00 PM.

Why was the derivatives time increased by 10 minutes?

The main purpose of the extension is to align the derivatives market with auction prices in the cash market. This will give traders additional time to hedge their open positions, adjust trades after the auction, exit intraday positions, and manage expiry day fluctuations.

How will the closing auction session work?

  • 3:15 PM- 3:20 PM: The market will move from normal trading to the auction phase and the reference price will be fixed.
  • 3:20 PM- 3:25 PM: Buyers and sellers will be able to place both market and limit orders.
  • 3:25 PM – 3:30 PM: Only limit orders will be accepted. Market orders placed during this time cannot be modified or cancelled.
  • 3:28 PM- 3:30 PM: Order entry will suddenly stop at any moment (random closure).
  • 3:30 PM- 3:35 PM: The final closing price will be decided after matching all the orders.

New way to determine closing price

Until now, the closing price of stocks was determined by the volume-weighted average price (VWAP) of the last 30 minutes of trading. Under the new rule, all buy and sell orders in F&O stocks will be combined to arrive at a “single equilibrium price,” which will become the official closing price. Similarly, the window for VWAP calculation for derivatives has also been changed from 3:10 pm to 3:40 pm.

What will be the benefit of this change?

This new system will ensure transparent pricing based on market demand and supply. It will curb sudden price fluctuations caused by large trades at the last minute, making it easier and more accurate for large investors to complete their trades.
