New Delhi. The spectacular conclusion of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026 marked a historic beginning for India. After 11 days of games, Scotland officially handed over the Commonwealth Games flag and baton to India. The next major stop for the Commonwealth Games is India, where Ahmedabad will host the centenary edition in 2030. This is India’s second time hosting the Games, after New Delhi in 2010.
The 2030 Games in Ahmedabad will be a landmark event marking the 100th anniversary of the Commonwealth Sport Movement. India’s hosting was formally approved by the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly in November 2025.
A glimpse of Indian culture was seen in the colourful ceremony.
The closing ceremony in Glasgow showcased India’s cultural heritage and modern identity in a unique way. Performances by Indian artists captivated the audience. A joint performance by Indian and Scottish artists also showcased the cultural partnership between the two countries.
The ceremony featured a cultural performance centering Ahmedabad and India on the Commonwealth Games in 2030. This was not just a formality of handing over the hosting rights, but also a glimpse of India’s vision for the next Commonwealth Games to the world.
Jasmine Lamboria became the flag bearer of India
Indian boxer Jasmine Lamboria was India’s flag bearer at the closing ceremony of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games. The Commonwealth Games flag was symbolically lowered as part of the formal handover of the hosting rights.
The flag was then delivered by Scottish officials and Commonwealth Sport representatives to the Indian delegation, including two-time Olympic medalist Neeraj Chopra, Indian Olympic Association President PT Usha, and Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghvi.
With this, the official journey of hosting the Commonwealth Games from Glasgow to Ahmedabad started.
India will create another history in 2030
Hosting the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad will be a significant milestone in India’s sporting history. Previously, New Delhi hosted the Commonwealth Games in 2010. 2030 will be India’s second time hosting the Games.
The 2030 event is also special because it is being called the Centenary Games, meaning the centenary edition of the Commonwealth Games. According to Commonwealth Sport, Ahmedabad has been formally approved as the host of the 2030 Centenary Games.
India’s impressive performance in Glasgow
The Indian contingent also performed exceptionally well at the 2026 Commonwealth Games. India won a total of 39 medals, including 13 gold, 17 silver, and 9 bronze. This performance placed India fourth in the medal tally.
India’s performance in Glasgow has also created a positive atmosphere for preparations to host the 2030 Games. Now, all eyes are on Ahmedabad, where the centenary edition of the Commonwealth Games will be held in four years.
From Glasgow to Ahmedabad… now it’s India’s turn
