Gary Sobers Passes Away: A very sad news has come out from the cricket world. Sir Garfield (Gary) Sobers, the great West Indies cricketer and considered one of the best all-rounders in sporting history, passed away at the age of 89. He left this world just two weeks before his 90th birthday. There has been a wave of mourning in the cricket world due to his demise and players and fans from all over the world are paying tribute to him.

One of the greatest all-rounders in cricket history

Sir Garfield Sobers is considered to be the most complete all-rounder in the history of cricket. He represented West Indies for nearly two decades from 1954 to 1974 and left an indelible mark in all three departments – batting, bowling and fielding.

The biggest specialty of Sobers was that along with being an excellent batsman, he was equally effective in both fast bowling and spin. His agility on the field also puts him in the category of great players.

Such was the brilliant career of Gary Sobers.

Sir Garfield Sobers played 93 test matches for West Indies. During this time he:

  • 8032 runs
  • Average of 57.78
  • 26 centuries
  • 30 fifties

Apart from batting, he also did wonders with the ball and took 235 Test wickets in his name. He proved his usefulness in fielding by taking 109 catches.

Made first class debut at the age of 16

Sobers made his first-class debut for Barbados in 1953 at the age of just 16. Seeing his extraordinary talent, he got a place in the West Indies Test team the very next year in 1954.

Historic innings of 365* runs

In the year 1958, he scored the first century of his Test career against Pakistan, which later turned into a historic inning of 365 unbeaten runs. This was the highest individual score in an innings of Test cricket at that time and this record stood for 36 years. Later in 1994, Brian Lara broke this record by scoring 375 runs.
