With the southwest monsoon remaining highly active across the country, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has released its latest weather bulletin for Monday, August 3. According to the forecast, heavy rains accompanied by stormy winds are set to continue lashing multiple parts of the country. The IMD has sounded a serious warning for extremely heavy rainfall in three states, particularly highlighting Bihar and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal. Meanwhile, widespread heavy rain and lightning alerts have been issued for the northern plains—including Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and Haryana—as well as several hilly regions.
Severe Warning: Extremely Heavy Rain in 3 Major States
According to the Meteorological Department, the maximum impact of the monsoon on August 3 will be concentrated in three primary regions:
Bihar: The state is bracing for highly intense monsoon showers. The IMD has issued a strict Orange Alert, warning of torrential and very heavy rainfall across various districts.
Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim: The areas adjacent to Northeast India are also expected to witness very heavy, disruptive rains on Monday.
Arunachal Pradesh: The northeastern hilly state faces a strong possibility of very heavy rainfall at multiple locations, prompting authorities to warn of potential river water level rises and localised flooding.
State-Wise Heavy Rain Alert: From Delhi-NCR to South India
The IMD bulletin notes that a large portion of the country will remain under the influence of active monsoon conditions today. Here is the regional breakdown:
North-West India: Heavy rain is expected at isolated places over Eastern and Western Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and Punjab. The hilly states of Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and the Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh region will also continue to see heavy showers.
East and Central India: Jharkhand, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh are highly likely to experience heavy rainfall. The Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands is also on alert for severe showers.
Northeast India: In addition to Assam and Meghalaya, isolated areas in Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura have been placed under a heavy rain alert.
West India: Coastal regions including Konkan and Goa, along with the hilly and coastal belts of Central Maharashtra, are expected to receive heavy rainfall.
South India: Heavy rains will persist across Coastal Karnataka, South Interior Karnataka, Kerala and Mahe, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal.
Thunderstorms, Lightning, and Gusty Winds
The weather bureau has also issued detailed warnings regarding thunderstorms, lightning strikes, and high-speed surface winds for August 3.
Up to 50 kmph Winds: Strong winds reaching speeds of 40 to 50 km/h, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, are highly probable in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Mahe, Lakshadweep, North Interior Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal.
30-40 kmph Winds: Winds blowing at 30 to 40 km/h with thunderstorms will affect Bihar, Coastal and South Interior Karnataka, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, West Bengal and Sikkim, and the Jammu and Kashmir-Ladakh region.
Lightning Risk: There is a specific threat of thunder and lightning across parts of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Chhattisgarh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Rayalaseema, Uttarakhand, and Vidarbha.
Surface Winds: Strong surface winds are likely during the daytime over the plains and coastal areas of Coastal Andhra Pradesh, the entire Karnataka region, Kerala and Mahe, Lakshadweep, and Telangana.
Residents in flood-prone areas and commuters are strongly advised to check local weather updates before stepping out, as persistent rain may trigger localised waterlogging and traffic disruptions.
