Sonam Wangchuk: Sonam Wangchuk’s health deteriorated on the 21st day of her hunger strike, police forcibly admitted her to the hospital on the orders of Delhi High Court!

New Delhi. Renowned educationist and environmental activist Sonam Wangchuk, who was on indefinite hunger strike at Jantar Mantar in the national capital Delhi for the last 20 days, was removed from the protest site by the Delhi Police on Saturday (July 18, 2026) morning and admitted to the hospital. Wangchuk’s physical condition had become extremely critical as the hunger strike entered its 21st day. A senior Delhi Police official said that this action has been taken in compliance with the orders of the Delhi High Court and the expert medical advice of the doctors, so that he can be given immediate ‘essential medical care’. During this police action, the protesters present at Jantar Mantar staged a massive protest, after which heavy police force has been deployed in the entire area. Why was Sonam Wangchuk sitting on fast? Sonam Wangchuk, along with ‘Cockroach Janata Party’ (CJP) and students’ organization, has been protesting in Delhi for the last 28 days. Wangchuk himself had participated in this fast from June 28. Their main demand is the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the alleged rigging and paper leak cases in the Medical Entrance Examination (NEET) in the country. Along with this, compensation is also being demanded for the families of the victim students. The agitators had also announced a ‘March to Parliament’ on July 20, the first day of the monsoon session of Parliament, just two days before which the police took this step. Danger of impact on organs: Doctors had warned. The team of doctors of Delhi Medical Association was continuously keeping an eye on Sonam Wangchuk’s health. According to the medical report that came on Friday morning, his weight had reduced to 56.55 kg due to 20 days of fasting. According to doctors, his body had reached the third stage of fasting, where the risk of damage to internal organs increases significantly after the depletion of glucose and carbohydrates in the body. The medical team had recommended 24-hour monitoring after ketone bodies were found in his urine. Police action after High Court order, tension at Jantar Mantar In view of Wangchuk’s continuously deteriorating health, Delhi High Court had directed the administration to ensure his daily health check-up and safety. According to the police, when an attempt was made to shift him to VMMC and Safdarjung Hospital on the advice of the medical team, the protesters created a blockage, leading to minor scuffles and chaos. Police have detained some workers, including CJP president Abhijit Dipke, who was leading the protest, and have appealed to the common people to vacate Jantar Mantar peacefully.
