Cervical causes, symptoms and its remedies

The upper part of the spine that supports our neck is called the cervical spine. This structure helps in handling the weight of the head as well as helps in easily rotating the neck in different directions. The cervical spine is made up of seven small bones (vertebrae), the discs between which work to absorb shocks and maintain balance between the bones. When there is excess pressure on these bones, discs or surrounding nerves due to prolonged poor posture, continuous sitting or other reasons, problems like neck pain, stiffness, strain and sometimes spreading to the shoulders or arms can begin.

In common parlance, this condition is called cervical problem. Initial symptoms of cervical problem may include neck pain, stiffness in shoulders, headache, tingling or numbness in hands and difficulty in rotating the neck. If these symptoms are ignored for a long time, the problem can become serious and everyday activities can also be affected.

To avoid this, experts recommend adopting correct sitting posture. Keep the computer screen at eye level, have a chair that provides adequate back support and after every 30 to 45 minutes, get up for a few minutes or do light stretching. Regular exercise, neck and shoulder exercises and a balanced lifestyle can also help reduce the risk of cervical problems.
