UN strict on violence in PoK, demands fair investigation and accountability from Pakistan
New Delhi: The United Nations has expressed serious concern over the increasing violence and political tension in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). Keeping an eye on the situation in the area, the United Nations Human Rights Office has demanded an impartial and independent investigation into the deaths of protesters and security personnel. This appeal has come at a time when tension is increasing in the area before the assembly elections proposed on July 27.
Appeal to maintain peace
In a statement issued from Geneva, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk has appealed to all parties to exercise restraint and maintain peace. He said that many people have lost their lives in violent incidents in recent weeks, a large number of which are said to be protesters. Some security personnel have also died. In such a situation, a transparent and independent investigation of every death is necessary so that the truth can come out and accountability can be fixed.
The United Nations has also expressed concern about the ban imposed on the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC). Pakistan has banned this organization under anti-terrorism laws, calling it a threat to public order and security. After this, many leaders of the organization have been detained.
Appeal to provide legal aid
The Human Rights Office says that criminalizing a civil organization and restricting people’s right to assemble peacefully raises serious questions about freedom of expression and democratic rights. The agency has appealed to the authorities to provide legal aid to those detained, allow them to contact their families and ensure all rights of judicial process.
Concern expressed about restrictions
The United Nations has also expressed concern about the restrictions on internet services in the region. The agency says that restrictions on communication services cause difficulties to the common people and affect access to information. Therefore, internet services should be completely restored as soon as possible. The United Nations has urged Pakistan and the local administration to start a meaningful political dialogue by involving all parties to reduce the rising tension in the region. The agency believes that resolution of people’s grievances and fundamental problems is possible only through dialogue and democratic process.
