Passport issue in Indian cricket, BCCI made a strong argument in Bombay High Court

The Board of Control for Cricket in India is the richest cricket board in the world. The domestic season in India starts from the end of August or September. Ranji Trophy, Vijay Hazare Trophy, Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and Duleep Trophy are the most popular domestic tournaments in India. BCCI has challenged the domestic tournament itself in the Bombay High Court, in which the board has said that it is necessary to have an Indian passport to play domestic tournaments. Let us understand the whole matter.

The case reached Bombay High Court

Actually, 12 young players had filed a petition in the Bombay High Court. These players have OCI (Overseas Citizen of India) card. But do not have an Indian passport. In such a situation, according to BCCI rules, these 12 players cannot play domestic tournaments in India. These players challenged this rule of BCCI in the court. During the hearing, BCCI said that OCI card is not Indian citizenship. This card definitely provides some facilities. But this does not make a person a citizen of India. Therefore such players cannot participate in India’s domestic tournaments.

BCCI further said that if a player gets an Indian passport then he can play domestic tournaments as per the rules of the board. The board also said that it is very important to have an Indian passport for Team India and to play domestic cricket. This rule applies to all players.

Next hearing will be held on August 13

However, BCCI and young players have presented their respective arguments in the court. Now the next hearing of this case will be on August 13. Now the court’s decision will decide whether players holding OCI cards will participate in domestic tournaments in future or not. For now both sides will have to wait.
