Supreme Court Amendment Bill: Significant news has emerged regarding the Supreme Court Amendment Bill 2026. The Lok Sabha passed the Supreme Court Amendment Bill by voice vote on Monday. Following the enactment of this bill, the total number of judges, including the Chief Justice (CJI), will increase from 34 to 38. Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal introduced the bill when the House convened at 2 p.m. However, due to a massive uproar by opposition parties, no discussion on the bill could take place. The House passed it by voice vote amid the uproar. The government believes that increasing the number of judges will expedite the hearing of cases.
Bill Passed Amid Uproar
In the House, opposition party MPs continued to raise slogans against the Ram Temple offerings and the police action against students. The Presiding Chairman appealed to the MPs to return to their seats and join the discussion, but the sloganeering continued. The bill was then passed without debate. The Law Minister explained that the government had already introduced an ordinance in this regard in May. Based on that ordinance, five new judges have already been appointed to the Supreme Court. Now, with this new bill, that ordinance has been given a stable legal form.
