Raptors unwilling to assume Kawhi Leonard penalty risk

The Toronto Raptors are reportedly refusing to finalize a trade for Kawhi Leonard because they do not want to inherit the risk of potential NBA penalties tied to the league’s ongoing investigation into Leonard’s previous dealings with the Los Angeles Clippers.

According to multiple reports, the NBA informed Toronto that completing the trade before the investigation concludes could make the Raptors responsible for any sanctions imposed directly on Leonard. While team-level penalties—such as fines or lost draft picks—would remain with the Clippers if wrongdoing is found, player-specific punishments, including a possible suspension or contract-related action, could affect the acquiring team.

The investigation centers on allegations that Leonard received a $28 million endorsement agreement from Aspiration, a company with business ties to Clippers owner Steve Ballmer. League officials are examining whether the arrangement improperly circumvented the NBA’s salary cap. The Clippers have denied any wrongdoing and maintain they acted within league rules.
