Trailer of the film ‘Ramayana’ and the debate on social media
New Delhi: Since the release of the trailer for the film “Ramayana,” the characters’ looks and costumes have sparked debate on social media. In particular, reactions to Sai Pallavi’s portrayal of Sita and Lara Dutta’s portrayal of Kaikeyi have been mixed.
Some users questioned the styling of the outfits, while others compared Kaikeyi’s look to characters from TV serials through memes. Now, the film’s costume designers, Rimple and Harpreet Narula, have expressed their opinion on these reactions.
Rimple’s statement on Sita’s look
Costume designer Rimple said she was already aware that the film’s looks would be discussed and compared. According to her, the Ramayana is an important part of Indian culture, and everyone has their own image of its characters.
Responding to questions about Sai Pallavi’s Sita look, especially the blouse, Rimple explained that the design was carefully crafted. She said she tried to bring the same feeling of Goddess Sita to the screen as she had in her mind.
The importance of creative freedom and research
According to Rimple, while historical research is essential in costume design, the artist’s interpretation of a character’s visual presentation is also crucial. Due to the lack of sufficient evidence of period clothing, designers have to draw inspiration from art, temple photographs, miniature paintings, and the works of Raja Ravi Varma.
He said that Ramayana has been interpreted differently in different cultures and this film is also his own creative presentation in the same tradition.
Harpreet’s clarification on Kaikeyi’s look
Regarding the criticism surrounding Lara Dutta’s Kaikeyi look, Harpreet Narula said that each color used in the costume was thoughtfully chosen. According to him, green symbolizes motherhood, while deep maroon reflects the emotional struggles Kaikeyi faces and the gravity of the difficult decision she is making.
He urged audiences not to judge the film based solely on images before watching it. The designers’ aim was to visually present an ancient epic to a new generation.
