Vidurji also shared important insights into the feeling of pride, understanding which can help a person overcome their pride.
The Mahabharata, the most sacred text of Sanatan Dharma, elaborates on the feeling of pride. Chapters 33 and 40 of this text contain the thoughts of Vidura. In these chapters, Vidura explains that pride deprives a person of five precious things. Let us understand how ego can ruin a person’s life.
Destruction of a person due to ego
According to Vidura, people who are proud of their beauty and wealth soon lose their ability to learn, peace of mind, their critical thinking, true love and respect.
Learning Ability – People who are proud of their abilities tend to consider themselves the most knowledgeable. This arrogant individual loses their ability to think, understand, and learn new things. A person who doesn’t learn over time lacks mental development.
Peace of Mind – Vidur explained that people who are proud of their looks are always worried about their beauty fading. This leads to a loss of mental peace.
Relationship breakdown – An arrogant person always considers themselves superior and superior to others. They also disregard their relationships. In such circumstances, a person’s relationships with their loved ones are broken.
Losing a guide – When a person becomes too proud, they don’t listen to others’ guidance. This also leads to losing their well-wishers.
Respect – An arrogant person forgets to respect others. They often even insult others. This is why arrogant people never receive true respect.
