Automobile Desk: India is making a big breakthrough in the electric vehicle (EV) sector. The country’s leading automobile company Tata Motors is now accelerating its pace towards completely eliminating Chinese batteries in the production of cars. The Tata Group has prepared a special plan to manufacture LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) battery cells using its technology.
Tata Group’s battery manufacturing arm
Agretas Energy Storage Solutions (Agretas Energy Storage Solutions) is setting up a pilot production line for LFP cells at its new manufacturing facility in Sanand, Gujarat. The pilot project will produce a large number of battery cells in the initial phase. After testing the performance, safety and quality of these cells, it will be scaled up for large-scale commercial production (commercial production).
Tata is likely to backtrack on this new strategy or face tougher policies. The previous Tata plan was to source battery technology from its partner, but the company decided to leverage its power to challenge the Chinese government’s ban on exporting advanced battery technology. This problem is not limited to Tata, other Indian conglomerates like Reliance and JSW are also affected, which are leading the charge in battery manufacturing in the country.
A joint team of experienced engineers from India, South Korea and China is working to accelerate this project. This team will produce batteries that pass the tests to repair and start the full process. In addition, the Vata Group is also setting up a state-of-the-art battery research and development center in Bengaluru with a huge investment of about $400 million (about Rs. 3,300 crore), where future energy technologies will be explored.
The indigenous LFP battery manufacturing is a complete replacement for India’s automotive network. It was the largest single-digit share of electric vehicles. Without developing the technology locally, India’s dependence on China will not only decrease, but the cost of electric cars and commercial vehicles will also be significantly reduced in the coming time. It will create a lot of new opportunities in the manufacturing sector within the country and will emerge as a major EV manufacturing hub globally.
